To reduce the amount of energy used in heating and cooling their homes, most people focus on adding insulation. But controlling air infiltration is more important. Airtight homes cost less to heat and cool and are more comfortable to occupy (as long as the homes are equipped with mechanical ventilation systems). Airtight homes are more durable, too. In leaky houses, moist, heated air escapes to cooler areas, such as insulated walls and ceilings, and the vapor condenses, causing mold, mildew, rot and other moisture related problems.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) tells homeowners in their research report:
Energy Losses and Comfort
Typical duct systems lose 25 to 40 percent of the heating or cooling energy put out by the central furnace, heat pump or air conditioner.
Homes with ducts in a protected area such as a basement may lose somewhat less than this while some other type of systems (such as attic ducts in hot, humid climates) often lose more.
This wasted energy increases your monthly utility bills and causes hot and cold spots. It is not uncommon to find that over a third of the heating and cooling you pay for does not make it to your living area. Duct problems are often the real reason and old system couldnt keep up.
